Jive is a New York based record label that deals largely with hard-core hip-hop music. It belongs to the Sony Music Group and functions under the label name Zomba Label Group. Its name has been inspired from a famous dance and music form called Jive that is prevalent in South America. From the day of its inception it had functioned as an independent company until 2002. In 2002 it was acquired by the Bertelsmann Music Group. This deal involved US $2.74 billion which was the largest acquisition of its times.
The parent company of Jive was Zomba which came into existence in the mid 70s in London. It was a management and publishing company and had no relation with record labels. It was co-founded by Clive Cladder and Ralph Simon. Both these men were interested in producing and song writing and for this reason they initially entered into a corporate relation with Arista records in the US.
When Jive records were started in 1977, Arista was facing troubles with the distribution of rock albums in North America. Under such circumstance Calder and Simon opined to benefit from their connection with Mutt Lange who could have been of great help. This idea worked and soon Jive had acts like Billy Ocean, Tight Fit, Samantha Fox and A flock of Seagulls under its belt. However Calder wanted Jive to focus primarily on Hip-hop genre and for this reason he groomed Bary Weiss, a young college graduate and formed Whodini. Due to Arista’s disinterest in hip-hop genre, in 1987 Jive finally cut its ties with Arista. Towards the end of the decade Jive had a multitude of hip-hop acts like DJ Jazzy Jeff, Whodini, E-40, KRS-One, etc. It also had R&B acts like Aaliyah and R.Kelly. But 90s marked the decade of massive success for Jive as it signed with famous artists like Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and *NSYNC
Ever since its formation the distribution rights of Jive Records have motioned between number of companies until it got finally acquired by the Sony music. Initially it was being distributed by the Arista records and it continued to be that way till 1987. This Jive relied on RCA Records (created by BMG) for its distribution. Before the deal between Jive and RCA expired, BMG bought a large part of the shares of Zomba in 1991. This in turn made it a distributor for Jive. For the mid 90s the distribution network for Jive varied according to the region and territory. Its recordings were distributed by Virgin, BMG and Zomba itself in various parts of the world. Later when BMG totally acquired Zomba all the operations of Jive came under its control. In the late 2008, BMG was merged with Sony and in this way now Jive is controlled and operated under Sony Music.
